Year A - Epiphany of the Lord

Jan 6, 2011

First Reading
Isa 60:1-6

Psalm
Ps 72:1-7, 10-14

Second Reading
Eph 3:1-12

Gospel
Mt 2:1:12

Hannah's Child -- Hauerwas

Theologian: Christian Contrarian

No, This War Would Not Be Moral
The identification of cross and flag after Sept. 11 needs to be called what it is: idolatry. We are often told that America is a great country and that Americans are a good people. I am willing to believe that Americans want to be good, but goodness requires that we refuse to lie to ourselves and our neighbors about the assumed righteousness of our cause.
If Christians could remember that we have not been created to live forever, we might be able to help ourselves and our non-Christian brothers and sisters to speak more modestly and, thus, more truthfully and save ourselves from the alleged necessity of war against "evil."

Hauerwas Again

Writing is hard and difficult work because to write is to think. I do not have an idea and then find a way to express it. The expression is the idea. So I write because writing is the only way I know how to think. I write, moreover, because I have something to say. That I have something to say. That I have something to say is not a personal achievement. I have something to say because I am a Christian. I also have readers who obligated to care about what I write. They are called Christians. What an extraordinary gift. Audience makes all the difference. I am an academic, but I do not have to write only for other academics. I write for a people who, no matter how ambiguous the identification "Christian" may be, think that what theologians say should matter. I believe that God has given me something to say. I have been given the work of trying to imagine what it means to be Christian in a world that Christians do not control.
Stanley Hauerwas, Hannah's Child, p.235.

And also his prayer (wrote after few weeks following Sep 11, 2001:
To go on "as though nothing has happened" surely requires us to acknowledge that you are God and we are not. It is hard to remember that Jesus did not come to make us safe, but rather he came to make us disciples, citizens of your new age, a kingdom of surprise.

ibid. p.267.

Quote of the Day

I am a Christian theologian. People assume that I am supposed to be able to answer that question. I have no idea how to answer that question. If anything, what I have learned over the years as a Christian theologian is that none of us should try to answer such questions. Our humanity demands that we ask them, but if we are wise we should then remain silent. .... Such "answer" cannot help but turn Christianity into an explanation. For me, learning to be a Christian has meant learning to live without answers. Indeed, to learn to live in this way is what makes being a Christian so wonderful. Faith is but a name for learning how to go on without knowing the answers. That is to put the matter too simply, but at least such a claim might suggest why I find that being a Christian makes life so damned interesting.
Stanley Hauerwas, Hannah's Child, p.207-8.

Happy New Year

  • 開始嘗試讀一點MT(不知道一年能讀完多少?)
(Karl Barth Reading
  • 再生出兩篇盡全力的Term Paper(一學期一篇)
